Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that occurs in individuals exposed to asbestos. Mesothelioma victims have either inhaled or swallowed asbestos fibers which then travel through the body and become lodged in different tissues. The most common origin site for mesothelioma is the pleura, which is the protective membrane lining the lungs. This is known as pleural mesothelioma. Mesothelioma can also occur in the peritoneum, which is the lining around the abdomen. In very rare cases it can occur in the pericardium, the lining around the heart, and in the tunica vaginalis testis, which lines the male reproductive tissues. Each year between twenty-five hundred and four thousand people are diagnosed with mesothelioma, and even more with other asbestos-related diseases.
Mesothelioma has a very long latency period. The time between the exposure to asbestos and the onset of the disease is at least 10 years and as many as 70 years after exposure. That means that a worker in a factory or shipyard or otherwise exposed in the 1940’s or 1950’s may not experience any symptoms of mesothelioma until this year.
If you worked in a high-risk industry and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, or you have lost someone to an asbestos-related illness, it is your right to seek compensation from those responsible for your situation.
